Winter
The most reliable window countrywide: cool and dry in the north (Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay), warm and dry in the south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta), and comfortable in between. It’s also peak season, so book flights and hotels well ahead, especially around Tet (Lunar New Year), when much of the country travels domestically at once.
Spring
A comfortable shoulder season before the summer heat and rains arrive. The north stays mild, the central coast is dry and at its best for Hoi An and Da Nang, and the south is warming towards its hottest months. Good value before the crowds and prices climb again.
Summer
Hot and humid nationwide, with the wet season under way in the north and south. The central coast, by contrast, is in its dry season through this stretch the reverse of the rest of the country which makes Hoi An and Da Nang a good pick when the north and south are at their stickiest.
Autumn
Rice terraces turn gold across Sapa and Mu Cang Chai, and the north settles into some of its most photogenic weeks. The trade-off is the central coast: this is typhoon season around Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An, and flooding can disrupt travel with little notice worth planning around if that’s on your route.
Vietnam runs three climates north to south, so the right season depends on your route the window that suits Hanoi and Sapa is not the one that suits Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City.
